Happy new moon in Aquarius, my friends! As I write this post, I feel a lot of enthusiasm about the lunar cycle ahead. So far, January’s astrology has been quite intense and many of us have been facing change—all kinds of it, good and bad.

As we welcome the first new moon of the decade, we also get infused with some of the most innovative, exciting energy the universe holds—the innovative Aquarian energy.

As I said in my interview with Erika Smith for Refinery 29, January’s new moon is the perfect time to channel your inner rebel by becoming an activist. After an intense and volatile beginning to the year brought by eclipse season and the Saturn-Pluto conjunction, it is becoming crystal-clear that in order to realign our vision as a society, each one of us needs to do something.

At a personal level, this is our biggest opportunity to rebel and break the rules—and yes, even our own rules we have established for ourselves! You get me now? Ruled by wild-child Uranus, who will also be squaring this moon from its position in Taurus, this lunation will be sending innovative, inventive, and sometimes erratic vibes. But if you can see and feel past the shocking waves, you are in for a treat. Uranus equals genius. And although this 90 degrees aspect can bring an inner—our outer—tension our way, it can certainly provide the necessary friction to make us act.

Of course, it also helps that the Lunar New Year or Chinese New Year is the next day, giving way to the year of the metal Rat, an animal that is known for its velocity, creativity, and eye for the bling.

In short, during the days surrounding the Aquarius new moon… be daring.
